If you’re on the hunt for a new home and the thought of living in an apartment or standard brick house in suburbia leaves you a little underwhelmed, why not invest in a luxury cave home?

hidden cave home: coolest property purchase ever

This cave dwelling in Arkansas, U.S.A was purpose-built in 1983 as a bomb shelter, but then was sold at the end of the Cold War and transformed into a hotel, featuring 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, kitchen, living area, and waterfall. Another selling point is the helipad just outside, because, well, you need somewhere to park your helicopter, right?

The Beckham Creek Cave Lodge is currently listed for sale at $2.75 million.

The cave was originally purchased for $146,000 with 240-acres of land by Celestial Tea co-founder John Hay in 1983. He spent $2 million over the course of 4 years transforming the cave into a bomb shelter for potential protection during the Cold War. It was designed so that during a threat, all of the caves openings could be sealed with concrete blocks.

After the war ended, Hay sold the shelter as it was no longer required. From this, the 5,800 square foot cave was converted into a luxurious hotel, with its most recent updates carried out in 2014.

It is now completely modernised, with a highly functional kitchen renovation and wooden bar where guests can come together, as well as thermal heating throughout to ensure the space is comfortable and cosy.

The natural rock formations within the cave have been maintained during the renovations to really give the dwelling a natural, earthy atmosphere, as can be seen in the generous master bedroom.

The ensuite to the master bedroom is lavishly fitted with an overhead rain shower amongst the exposed rock, to really allow yourself to relax.

If this isn’t enough natural water flow for you, the cave even features an actual waterfall within its walls!

The interior isn’t the only thing this place has to offer though, with this beautiful view from the deck right outside. This entertaining area would make you the hottest host, perfect for BBQs and a few drinks by the firepit!

Remember though, don’t drink and fly! Give your chopper keys to a responsible, designated driver.
