Beautiful structures like arbors, pergolas, and trellises can be used to adorn the exterior of your home. In fact, they have been around since ancient times, where they were a “stock standard” feature in ancient Greece.

Arbor design ideas

They look very stylish, in addition to serving their purpose of providing shade and structure. Arbors are also a great way to shield you from adverse weather conditions, like strong winds and rain. Here are a few beautiful front arbor design ideas to get inspired by:

1. Embellish your arbor with vines

Arbors embellished with beautiful vines make for an absolutely stunning structure. Selecting the right vines to decorate arbors with has to be given careful thought. Weather and where you live play a major role in how well the vines will grow. For the northern parts of Australia, some of the best options are Bougainvilleas, Stephanotis and Madagascar Jasmine.

For those living in southern Australia, Star Jasmine, Hardenbergia and Coral Pea are perfect, from a list of many.

2. Build a wooden arbor

Arbors are beautiful structures on their own, but they look exceptionally good if you choose the right materials to build them. Consider having a Carpenter construct you a wooden arbour, as wooden structures are well  known as one material that exudes class. Wood is also very adaptable; you can use numerous pieces of wood to build the frame or use tree branches that may be lying around to give an arch shape to the arbor.

3. Create a welcoming entrance

Arbors can be used at the front entrance of your home to welcome guests. In addition to being a great garden design feature, arbors look stunning as a single aesthetic focal point. They can be simple or embellished, depending on your personal preference. The only thing to keep in mind here, is to build the arbor in accordance with the overall design and look of your house. In this way, the arbor will fit naturally into the rest of your landscaping and add to your home’s overall look. It will also be a great way to help get those reluctant home buyers on your side from the start, since it’s one of many gardening tips to increase property value.

4. Include a side garden structure

One of the great features of arbors is that they provide a tunnel-like passageway into a different area. This feature is a perfect choice to use when incorporating arbors in side gardens. Normally narrow in width, side gardens use arbors at the entrance pretty well to promote a bigger look. It does this by giving the illusion of more space,  to make the space seem longer. Also, arbors make for a warm and welcoming structure when placed in a space that is quite bare. It also gives your garden or backyard area an organised look. This is great when you need to find ways to give your area some substance.

5. Add some colour

Who says you can’t decorate your arbors with a bounty of colour? Apart from decorating them with vines and pretty flowers, you can also colour the main structure to give it an extra vibrant look. Usually painted white, arbors can be painted in any colour. You can try using contrasting colours to the leaves and flowers. For instance, yellow or red always looks great alongside the green of the leaves or other vegetation.

6. Create a hedge arbor

Instead of one free standing arbor, different structures can be used in unison to make one beautiful structure. One such great idea to try, is look at mixing up an arbor with a hedge. If you have a hedge built around the entrance of your house, you can construct the arbor in ingenious ways. Why not try to build the structure so that it rises from within the hedge? Such a look is quite different to the norm and will be a conversation starter for any new guest.

7. Be creative

You can be as creative as you like when it comes to decorating your home. A simple arbor with climbing vines looks great but you can always mix it up to create something extraordinary. For instance, hanging a pendant light at the center of the arbor will add just the right amount of class and beauty to an already elegant structure. Another idea would be to intertwine fairy lights within the vines. Turn the lights on at night or go solar and watch the magic unfold.

If you are still not quite sure if an arbor is the way to go, consider this: today, outdoor structures are becoming increasingly prized by potential home buyers. As a result, these can be the difference between getting a quick sale or having your property sitting on the market for long periods of time!
